The good news is that the FAA:
has preliminarily determined that Boeing’s proposed changes to the 737 MAX design, flightcrew procedures and maintenance procedures effectively mitigate the airplane-related safety issues
Can’t help but think that the pandemic was good timing for the MAX, anyway. Keeps it out of the spotlight and gives Boeing time to work things out .

Of course Reuters doesn’t link to the NPRM for the proposed AD.
https://www.faa.gov/news/media/attachments/19_035n-R3-8-3-20.pdf
The four proposed changes are
Updated control laws in t he flight control software
Having the main display include an AOA disagree alert graphic
Revisiting flight manual operating procedures
Re-routing horizontal stabilizer trim wires
This is all completely sensible. Though I am happy I’m not the guy trying to teach the 16-bit flight control computer new tricks.

I’m not sure that it’s anything new, just an official announcement of what they’ve been looking at all along. And I’m pretty sure that No. 2, the AOA disagree warning, was always part of the design, but Boeing had made it an option. I think the wiring was an issue that was discovered during the analysis, which is good, since they may have nipped something in the bud. At the end of the day, though, the ADs are the result of rigorous oversight that should have taken place all along, and not after so many people died.

Questions the whole world would love to have an answer for. Scary to think it may never be over.
